Gunnison Guided Fly Fishing Trips
Our highly skilled fly fishing guides float, wade, hike and drift the Gunnison Valley year-round to stay in tune with where the trout are biting, and what they are eating.
We pair our guests with the right guide to match your fishing style. Whether you are looking for a fly fishing trip for beginners, or a "canyon crawl" for the expert seeking a more technical challenge, our guides pay attention to what you want from your time on the water.
There are hundreds of ways to have fun fly fishing the Gunnison Valley. A long float down the Gunnison River for trophy trout is something every flyfisher should experience. We also love to take folks up to high mountain creeks with outsized fish that slurp dry flys with reckless abandon. If you are in Gunnison during the Fall, the Kokanee salmon run is something you won't want to miss. Let us teach you how to catch them like a pro.
A one-on-one guided wade is a great way to reduce the learning curve, improve your cast, and learn how to find fish in any river. Our guides take the time to educate guests about why one area of the river is more likely to hold feeding fish than another. We discuss why we choose a certain fly, and how to use each fly effectively. Our goal is to not only help you catch fish today, but to catch more fish in the future.

Our Fly Fishing Guides
Bryan Hess has been fly fishing the Gunnison Valley since 1998. Never far from water, he grew up on streams and lakes in Pennsylvania, and spent 10 years in Florida before calling the Rockies home. He enjoys fishing and guiding the local Gunnison waters with dries, nymphs and streamers and has recently picked up on euro-nymphing. He has been a beat judge and a monitor for the World Fly Fishing Championship and the local Superfly fundraiser for the Gunnison Angling Society. His career as a paramedic has taken him many places throughout the world - including the South Pacific, Mexico and the Bahamas. He has had the fortune to visit New Zealand to sight cast to big browns on the South Island, and frequents Wyoming to float and fish. He hopes to add Alaska and Mongolia to his list.
Kyle "Scooter" Burkart
Born and raised in the heart of the South East, Scooter learned to fish in the lush warm waters of Alabama as soon as he could walk. Scooter attended a fly fishing elective in college where learned the basics of fly fishing. After several years of whitewater raft guiding and traveling the country in search of whitewater rivers, Scooter realized the river is where he is at home. In 2014, Scooter moved to Crested Butte and instantly fell in love with the fly fishing culture and world class trout waters. Let Scooter show you his love and passion for rivers, fishing and the great outdoors.
Ryan is a Colorado native that grew up in northern Colorado fishing the Big Thompson, Poudre, and North Platte rivers, as well as the high alpine lakes and rivers in Rocky Mountain National Park. He believes there is more to fly fishing than catching fish, and has a true passion for guiding and teaching all the sport has to offer. Ryan has spent many years guiding fishing trips and whitewater raft trips from Alaska to Colorado. He moved to Gunnison in 2013 and started guiding fly fishing trips full time. He finished his degree in geology at Western State and now lives full time with his wife Cassie and their dog Orvis. Fly fishing is a life style to Ryan - so much of his free time is spent tying flies and exploring the vast fishing opportunities the valley has to offer. If you are looking for a fun filled and informative day on the river, stop by the fly shop and talk to Ryan. He would love to take you fishing!
Austin was raised in Colorado and has a lifelong passion for fly fishing. Years of guiding has fueled this fire as he continues to learn and grow in the sport. Streamer fishing is Austin's primary focus. If you are into that electric moment as you watch a big fish persue your streamer, Austin is your man.
Robert grew up harassing largemouth bass in local ponds in Southeast Georgia, and trout in and around the Smokey Mountains. After venturing west about 14 years ago, he spent 10 years fishing with his brother in the Gunnison area of Colorado. Now, managing the Gunnison River Fly Shop, he's having a blast providing information that gets clients into trout on the Taylor River, East River, and the Gunnison River to name a few. Rob enjoys teaching beginners, as well as working with accomplished anglers. Rob is passionate about fly fishing and he cherishes each opportunity to be on the water.
